How long can a bow be left strung?

When you pay a lot of money for a high-quality bow, you want to do everything in your power to take care of it, but based on the material your bow is made from, there are different timelines for how long you can leave your bow stung. No matter what kind of bow you have, it’s a good idea to get into the practice of unstringing it after each use because then, if you ever have a wooden bow, you’ve already got good habits.

What are the 5 rules of archery?

Archery requires you to be safe and responsible so that no one gets hurt. Arrows are dangerous weapons, and in the wrong hands, people can too easily get hurt, which is why you must be a responsible archer if you want to participate in this activity. The five following rules are not an exhaustive list, but they represent some of the most important rules.
  1. Never shoot an arrow into the sky or point your bow at other people (or animals you are not trying to hunt). While you may not have bad intentions doing these things and may just be joking around, too many times, fooling around has become a nightmare when people get hurt. Pointing an arrow at someone, even if you have no intention of shooting, is not different from pointing a gun at someone! It’s just not something you should do.
  2. Put safety first. If you think your equipment may be compromised, don’t continue shooting. Likewise, if you think your mood can impact your shooting dangerously, don’t pick up your bow. Additionally, you should never shoot a bow when you are under the influence of substances. You may not feel that impact, but people often don’t realize how off their response times and motor skills can be under the influence.
  3. Be aware of your environment. Always look around your target and shooting area to make sure that there are no hazards or innocents that can lead to terrible outcomes. You are responsible for making sure that where you are shooting is safe.
  4. Arrows are dangerous, so be careful with them. Make sure that you use an arrow quiver. You should also store your arrows in hard cases designed for bows. You should never dry fire an arrow because doing so can hurt you and your bow.
  5. Protect yourself. Make sure you wear protection like armguards and finger protection, which can extend your ability to shoot. You should also make sure other shooters are aware of where you are.

Is it better to restring a bow or buy a new one?

Most manufacturers say that you should replace your string around two or three years after purchase, but that timeframe is not appropriate for everyone. You have to consider factors like how long you shoot, your shooting environment (humidity or dryness can make string less resilient), and the weight of your arrows. If your string ever starts to look worn out, you should always replace it to be safe.
